REVIEW: Twilight by Stepenie Meyer

Twilight (Twilight, #1)
Twilight (1)

by Stephenie Meyer

Genre(s): Paranormal, Romance, Young Adult
Pages: 498
Published: Sept 2006
Publisher:  Little Brown and Company

Official Summary:  "About three things I was absolutely positive.

First, Edward was a vampire.

Second, there was a part of him - and I didn't know how dominant that part might be - that thirsted for my blood.

And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

In the first book of the Twlilight Saga, internationally bestselling author Stephenie Meyer introduces Bella Swan and Edward Cullen, a pair of star-crossed lovers whose forbidden relationship ripens against the backdrop of small-town suspicion and a mysterious coven of vampires. This is a love story with bite.

Review:  At first I really enjoyed reading this book. However, my opinion has gone down a bit since reading The Vampire Diaries. So much of the concept for this story seems to be taken from there. The basic, girl meets and falls for vampire boy with no rational or reasoning. Also the scene where Edward confirms he is a vampire and tries to scare Bella away. The scene is almost the same.

What I can give this story is I liked the characters, and story still. The town is described well enough to visualize yet still use the imagination. Good character diversity.

The thing I liked the least was the whole, sparkling vampire thing. I am not alone on this dislike, but I agree with those that mock this series for it. It is the most ridiculous vampire trait I have yet to read. Other than that, I liked how she wrote about them.

I especially liked the special abilities they have. Reading one's thoughts, emotional feeder, seers, etc. That is an aspect I can truly appreciate. Especially when not everyone has an extra ability. I typically prefer my vampires darker but this makes up for that.

Bella's character actually reminded me of a friends. From the clumsy coordination in gym to the liking hot, sunny deserts. While I would love to live in a more foresty town like Forks, she'd have dragged Bella back to Phoenix. So her character brought a few fond smiles to my face.

The writing is not great by any means but the story is enjoyable and easy to follow. I know many who view the book as a monstrous tomb but the style it is shared makes it go by quick. The pace is mostly fairly even, with the focus being more on characters than action, but there are a few parts (especially in the second half) that speed up nicely.

  2. As much crap as this series gets, I still like it. Although the last book has a lot of faults in my opinion, including making Jacob kind of creepy.

  5. I didn't like Vampire Diaries & didn't even finish the 1st book so I had nothing to comapre to, but I loved Twilight, despite the very creepy peeping Tom - Peeping Edward hahaha.

  6. I agree that so much of the story seems to be "borrowed" from other stories. I also agree that the writing is not great but that it reads quickly. I also like my vampires darker, but I liked how everyone had different abilities. Usually vampires can read minds. I liked that at least her vampires were a little more diverse.

  7. Thanks for the thorough review. I haven't started this series because I also am not crazy about this kind of vampire, and I heard the writing was not that good. You have confirmed that for me.

  8. I think this book is always going to be a natural favourite of mine. I loved everything about it. I have tried the Vampire Diaries books and I just couldn't enjoy them. I understand why you didn't like the whole sparkling vampires thing, but to me it made her version of vampires all the more unique and I like that she tried to do something different and add a more unique and personal definition to the term vampire for her novel. Love this so much <3
